Stevia is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Compositae family. Over 200 species of sweet stevia are recognized, most of them found in tropical regions of Central and South America. Stevia is widely used in confectionery. Used as a sugar substitute, it is known for its 30- to 40-fold sweeter taste than white sugar. However, the World Health Organization describes the herb as “absolutely harmless”.
This super sweet herb has fragile stems. The leaves, which have a sweet taste, are elliptical and covered with hairs (the leaves are mossy and dark green). Stevia blooms with tiny white flowers. Because the plant is more tropical, it requires light and heat, but also constant humidity. It grows to a height of 50 cm. The sowing rate is about 600 grams per hectare, and the planting scheme – in a row, the distance between plants is 40-50 cm.
Stevia is a highly heat-loving plant. She loves direct sunlight and does well in temperate climates. Prefers fertile, well-drained soil. It should be watered moderately. The crop is not winter-hardy, so if you want to save it for next year, you need to make shelters that maintain the optimum temperature above zero.
